Google Maps is a desktop web mapping service developed by Google.
It offers satellite imagery, street maps, 360° panoramic views of streets (Street View),
real-time traffic conditions (Google Traffic), and route planning for traveling
by foot, car, bicycle (in beta), or public transportation. (WP)
has many fine points,
including extremely good coverage and accuracy, a well-developed API, etc.
However, because it is a proprietary offering,
there are limits on the use of downloaded map data.
These limits keep OpenStreetMap
, for example,
from accepting mapping efforts that are based on data from Google Maps.
Also, the Google Maps API appears to be strongly oriented toward providing images,
as opposed to the structured data available from OpenStreetMap
This is a significant barrier to automated editing and reuse of the map data.
