Overview

Iron is a chemical element with the symbol Fe (from Latin: ferrum) and atomic number 26. It is a metal in the first transition series. It is the most common element (by mass) forming the planet Earth as a whole, forming much of Earth's outer and inner core.

-- Iron (WP)

Iron is a trace element necessary for photosynthesis in all plants. It is highly insoluble in sea water and is often the limiting nutrient for phytoplankton growth.

-- Iron fertilization (WP)

Phytoplankton and Zooplankton both need Iron to survive. Phytoplankton get it from the Environment; Zooplankton get it from Phytoplankton.
